Charging an EV is a continuous load that pulls massive current for hours. Splicing into existing household circuits or using cheap outlets creates high thermal risks. Under the National Electrical Code (NEC Article 625), electric vehicle charging is defined as a continuous load. This means the branch circuit, wiring, and breaker must be sized at 125% of the charger's maximum output. For example, if you install a 48-amp charger, you must run it on a 60-amp circuit (48A x 1.25 = 60A) utilizing thick 6 AWG copper wire. If you use a plug-in NEMA 14-50 outlet, the car will pull a maximum of 32 amps on a 40-amp continuous circuit. Additionally, code requires a GFCI breaker for plug-in chargers in garages or outdoors. Hardwired chargers bypass the plug entirely, eliminating physical resistance points and the need for a costly GFCI breaker, which is why we highly recommend hardwired installations for safety and longevity.

What is the difference between a Level 1 and a Level 2 charger?

Level 1 chargers plug into standard 120-volt home outlets. They are slow, providing only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. Level 2 chargers plug into or are hardwired into a 240-volt circuit (similar to an electric dryer). They charge up to 10 times faster, providing 25 to 50 miles of range per hour of charging, easily fully recharging your car overnight.

Do I need a panel upgrade to install a Level 2 charger?

Not necessarily. If your home has a 200-amp main panel, you usually have plenty of headroom to support a 50-amp or 60-amp circuit. If you have a 100-amp panel, we perform a load calculation. We can often configure the charger to pull lower amps (such as 16A or 24A) to avoid a costly panel upgrade while still charging 4x faster than a Level 1.

Why is hardwiring a charger safer than using a NEMA 14-50 plug?
